Safety Concerns: Weather Watchers May Get Laid-Off At Lambert

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The responsibility for watching over the weather at major airports across the country may soon be taken out of the hands of trained experts and handed over to air traffic controllers.

The responsibility of monitoring rapidly changing conditions at airports lies with highly trained professional observers like Larry Williams. He spent nearly 40 years as both a military and civilian observer. But, if cost cutting measures proposed by the FAA in response to the budget sequester are implemented, weather observers like Williams and all their experience, will be no-more.

“They know they are going to increase the risk, that’s a given, because you’re asking somebody to do two jobs instead of one.” said Larry Williams.

Florissant Family Lucky To Be Alive After Carbon Monoxide Scare

FLORISSANT, MO (KTVI)– A Florissant mother is thankful she and her seven children are alive after being overcome by carbon monoxide Sunday.

They were conscious but lethargic and barely made it out of their home in the 3500 block of Stonehaven.

Firefighters say there were dangerously high levels of CO in the house because the attic fan and furnace were running at the same time and all of the windows and doors were closed.

They advise homeowners to install carbon monoxide detectors in their home.

Community Waits For Judge To Decide Future Of Bridgeton Landfill

BRIDGETON, MO (KTVI)– As a judge decides the future of a troubled Bridgeton Landfill, community members feel like they’ve been left in the dark about the process to clean-up the site.

The Missouri Coalition for the Environment joined affected community members Monday, who don’t believe the state and republic services, the landfill owner, have been transparent enough while trying to reach a settlement.

Home owners and businesses have been dealing with a bad odor for months, due to an underground fire at the landfill.

The attorney general’s office and republic services met before a judge Monday afternoon.

He is reviewing the proposed settlement and will rule Tuesday on what the state can do about the landfill.

The attorney general is also expected to make an announcement on the case Tuesday.
