Police: Florissant Smash and Grab, Burning Car Crimes Connected | News
(KTVI) – Smash and grab thieves causing chaos again in our area.
This time they hit Legacy Jewelers- a family owned jewelry store in Florissant- just before 5am Friday morning.
The break-in leaving behind serious damage to the business.
‘It`s awful to see it this way especially when you put as much work as I have into making this store what it is in the past couple of years,’ said the owner John Sellers.
Investigators say the criminals stole a Dodge Durango from the Sunswept Apartments right by the Flower Valley Shopping Center on Lindbergh where the store is located.
Then, police say, the thieves backed the SUV right through the front of the jewelry store.
Seconds later, police tell us three male suspects ran out of the store and got into a green Acura.
The Acura then sped away… racing by a Florissant police officer on Route 367.
The officer tried to stop it but couldn`t- we`re told the officer did not chase the car for safety reasons.
A short time later, the Acura was found burning in Jennings near Theodore and Hamilton.
But there was no sign of any suspects.
Police say smash and grabs are tough crimes to get a handle on.
‘With using a vehicle as their weapon to get into these buildings, they can get in so quickly especially if you have a team of three people which it looks like we had here. They can grab a bunch of stuff in a very quick amount of time, get out and be gone usually before we`re even notified,’ said officer Andy Haarmann with the Florissant Police Department.
John`s family has owned Legacy Jewelers since 1997.
He says he`ll fix whatever is needed and continue to sell jewelry.
‘Nothing like this is going to slow me down,’ said Sellers.
Sellers says some items were taken but he is still putting together an exact list of what was stolen.
The thieves left the Durango at the scene when they jumped into Acura and took off.
